How it's made
Takaoka metal colouring (chakushoku)
Orii's colours are not painted on. Craftspeople simmer copper and brass in a mineral solution (niiro) or burn a rice-bran paste onto the surface with a torch (nukayaki), so the colour comes out of the metal itself. Temperature, timing and the movement of the flame all change the result, so no two pieces share exactly the same tone or pattern. Takaoka has carried this craft for over 400 years, and Orii has specialised in it since 1950.
