Daruma Painting Experience | Make Your Own Japanese Daruma
Visit to Takeuchi Daruma Shop
Since we were visiting, they kindly suggested that we try the experience, so we decided to take on the challenge of making daruma for the first time. Upon arriving at the shop, we were greeted by rows of daruma dolls, creating a wonderful atmosphere that reflected the long-standing tradition behind them.
First Step: Drawing the Mustache
Now, it was time to create our very own daruma!
The first thing we were taught was how to draw the daruma's "mustache."
Mr. Takeuchi showed us how to handle the brush and explained tips on balance, and then it was finally our turn to try.
At first, I felt a bit nervous, but as I recalled the guidance I had received, I began to draw freely. The thickness and flow of each line changed the expression of the daruma, and it was fascinating to see how each stroke brought out its individuality. It was a moment where I truly felt the charm of these traditional dolls.
Designing Our Daruma
After finishing the mustache, we moved on to coloring.
At this stage, I struggled a bit to decide on a design.
Meanwhile, Omura had already planned his design in advance, so he worked very smoothly.
His daruma was inspired by the uniform of his baseball team, created as a symbol of wishing for victory.

With the strong message of "Championship!" in mind, his daruma was shaping up to be very impressive.
As for me, after much thought, I chose a design with hearts and flowers.
Using my favorite color, yellow, I aimed to create a bright and gentle daruma that could also be enjoyed as interior decor.
The Finishing Touch
Once I started painting, I quickly got absorbed in the process and completely lost track of time.
And finally, it was complete.
A one-of-a-kind original daruma had been created.
Each piece reflected its creator's personality, and we were both very satisfied with the results.
A Memorable Cultural Experience
We would like to sincerely thank Takeuchi Daruma Shop for giving us this valuable opportunity to experience daruma-making. Being able to create our own daruma while connecting with traditional culture made it a truly memorable day.
