Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route | Toyama Mountain Guide

Toyama Prefecture is home to some of Japan's most dramatic mountain landscapes.

At the heart of them is the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, a spectacular journey through the Northern Japanese Alps.

Along the way, visitors can experience high-altitude plateaus, alpine lakes, towering snow walls, and Japan's tallest dam.

This time, we introduce some of the must-see mountain scenery of Toyama.

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route

The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the Northern Japanese Alps between Toyama and Nagano.

The route passes through an area surrounded by mountains rising to around 3,000 meters.

Visitors travel through the mountains using a combination of cable cars, buses, ropeways, and electric buses.

This makes it possible to experience high-altitude mountain scenery without completing a full mountain climb.

Murodo: the heart of the Alpine Route

Murodo is one of the most important stops on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

Located at an elevation of 2,450 meters, it offers expansive views of the surrounding mountains.

From here, visitors can explore walking trails and several of the area's best-known natural attractions.

Mikurigaike, a blue lake surrounded by mountains

About a 15-minute walk from Murodo Terminal is Mikurigaike.

This volcanic lake is one of the symbolic landscapes of the Alpine Route.

When conditions are calm, the surrounding Tateyama mountains can be reflected on the surface of the water.

The Snow Wall

Spring brings one of Tateyama's most famous sights: the enormous Snow Wall.

Snow accumulated during the winter is cleared from the road, creating walls that can reach up to around 20 meters in particularly snowy years.

Walking between these towering walls has become one of the most iconic experiences of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

Kurobe Dam

At the other side of the mountain route lies Kurobe Dam.

At 186 meters high, it is the tallest dam in Japan.

During the seasonal sightseeing discharge, large volumes of water are released from the dam, creating a powerful scene against the surrounding mountain landscape.

Experience Toyama's mountain landscapes

From alpine lakes to snow-covered mountain roads, Toyama offers landscapes that change dramatically with altitude and season.

The Tateyama area is one of the best places to experience the scale of Toyama's natural environment.
